Overview of the New UEFA Champions League Format (Effective from the 2024/25 Season)

Do you bleed for European Nights? From the magical Santiago Bernabéu to the electric atmosphere at the Etihad, UEFA is revolutionizing the Champions League from the 2024/25 season. It’s time for an expanded 36-team competition with a revolutionary single league phase to replace the traditional format of 32 teams grouped into eight groups of four.

Gone are the familiar group stage battles we have known for decades; in its place comes a new era whereby every match could throw up titans against underdogs in unexpected clashes across Europe’s finest stadiums. This is so much more than a format change; it’s the new concept of how Europe’s elite club competition unfolds.

Teams and League

Each European League is allowed to present a specific number of teams depending on its UEFA League Coefficient. As per January 2025, 16 nations presented 36 teams. Qualification breakdown is as follows.

England, Spain and France forward four teams where as Italy and  Germany 5 teams. Netherlands, Portugal and Austria present 2 teams. On the other hand, Scotland, Belgium, Croatia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia and Switzerland are represented by a single club each.

Single League Phase

This ensures more epic fixtures from Game week 1. Each team plays 8 matches with 8 different opponents. meaning we shall have more of this legendary tournament. Four of the games are away fixtures and the rest are home.

Draw Mechanics

Seeding

The teams are placed into 4 different pots; 9 teams each pool basing on their UEFA Club coefficients; which rank European leagues based on their performance in European Competition in the last five years. However, regardless of the Champions League Title Holder’s rank, they belong to Pot 1.

 The Matching Assignments

For the draw, a hybrid system is used. A team is manually drawn and its 8 opponents are randomly selected using the assigned software. Its made in such a way that teams face one opponent from each pot home and away. The software makes sure that no two teams from the same country face each other and a team cannot play more than two opponents from the same nation.

Advancement to Play-off and Knockout Phase

After the 8 league phase fixtures, the top 8 teams qualify automatically to the Round Of 16.

The teams placed 9th to 24 enter into a home and away Play-Off round as a second chance to make it to the Quarter Finals.

Play-Off Procedure

The teams that finish the league phase in 9th to 24 position qualify for the play offs. Below is the pre-determined procedure for determining this fixtures.

Teams from the 9th to 16th position are seeded and 17th to 24th unseeded. Each seeded team is paired against an unseeded team with this layout below;

  • Teams ranked 9th/10th face teams ranked 23rd/24th.
  • Teams ranked 11th/12th face teams ranked 21st/22nd.
  • Teams ranked 13th/14th face teams ranked 19th/20th.
  • Teams ranked 15th/16th face teams ranked 17th/18th.

The catch on the play-off round is ;

The seeded team gets to host the second leg; the most crucial game in European Fixtures. This phase is also determined basing on the team’s performance in the league phase; ensuring higher ranked teams get relatively weaker opponents.

Teams that played in the League Phase can meet themselves again. Also teams from the same nation can contest at this stage.

Knockout Phase

For the Knock Out phase, we shall follow the traditional Champions League format with a two legged ties leading up to the final.

This Year’s final shall be held at Allianz Arena; home to Bundesliga Side Bayern Munich in Germany on 31st May, 2025.
